Stain Removal Guide

How to Remove Biro & Ink Stains

Carpet · Sofa · Rug · Mattress — the safe home method, surface by surface, and an honest word on what will and won't fully lift.

A leaked biro or spilt ink looks alarming, but alcohol is its weak spot — surgical spirit dissolves most ballpoint and many inks. The key is to dab and lift, never rub, so you don't spread it into a bigger mark.

⏱️ The first 60 seconds
Lay a clean cloth under and over and blot — don't rub. Rubbing turns a small ink spot into a large grey smear.
What you'll need
  • Clean white cloths
  • Surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol)
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Cool water
  • Cotton wool

Step by step (carpet)

  1. Test first by dabbing surgical spirit on a hidden patch.
  2. Dab the ink with cotton wool lightly dampened in surgical spirit, lifting colour onto a clean piece each time.
  3. Work slowly from the outside in — patience stops it spreading.
  4. Wash the residue with a little washing-up liquid in cool water; blot.
  5. Rinse with clean water and press dry.

An old trick is alcohol-based hairspray instead of surgical spirit — it can work, but modern hairsprays vary, so plain surgical spirit is more reliable. Either way, test first.

By surface

🛋️ Sofas & upholstery

Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.

🧶 Wool & delicate rugs

Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.

🛏️ Mattresses

You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

✅ Do

  • Test the solvent on a hidden patch
  • Dab and lift, never rub
  • Swap to clean cotton wool often
  • Work from the outside in

🚫 Don't

  • Rub — it spreads the ink
  • Soak solvent into the backing
  • Use bleach
  • Over-wet the area
The honest likelihood
FRESH Fresh ballpoint usually lifts well with surgical spirit.
DRIED Older ink can leave a faint shadow.
WOOL Test carefully — or let us handle it.
