Spills happen — a knocked-over glass of red, a dropped mug of coffee, a pet accident, make-up on the sofa arm. The good news: most fresh stains can be dealt with at home if you act quickly and use the right method. Pick your stain below for a clear, safe, no-nonsense guide — including the honest truth about which ones fully lift and which leave a shadow.

AFTER
A real grease stain we lifted — drag the handle or use the arrow keys.
- Act fast. A fresh spill on top of the fibres lifts far more easily than one that's dried and set.
- Blot, don't rub. Rubbing drives the stain deeper and frays the pile — work gently from the outside in.
- Test first. Try any solution on a hidden patch to check it won't bleach or mark your particular carpet, fabric or rug.
- Never over-wet. Too much water soaks into backing, underlay or a mattress and causes smells, browning or mould.
- No heat, no bleach. Heat sets many stains (especially protein ones, like blood); bleach removes colour and causes permanent damage.

When it's not a stain — it's damage
We'd rather be straight with you: some marks aren't stains at all, and no amount of cleaning brings them back. Bleach splashes, sun-fade, old dye transfer and some pet damage have actually changed the colour or the fibres themselves — they're permanent. A good professional will always tell you honestly what's achievable before starting.
Tried the home method and it's still there — or it's a wool rug, a mattress or something you'd hate to ruin? Don't keep scrubbing. We're a Watford family business with 25 years on local carpets, fully insured and DBS-checked — and the quote's free.
